A Report on the 06 September 2007 Committee Meeting
Dr. Jane Eason, President-elect

Regarding yesterday's education subcommittee hearing, the committee said they must hear from teachers in the form of e-mail messages or hand- written letters. They do not like copy and paste form letters.  Mary Paige Boyce (SCCSS and SC SS Supervisors Association) and Jerry Mitchell (SC Geographic Alliance) did an excellent job speaking to the committee. I think I did better than Miss Teen SC....   I have attached my speech but I probably did only half of it, the other half I was responding to earlier comments like "Is this a turf war??"  "Good teachers will teach social studies even if it is not tested."   "Superintendents will not allow social studies instruction to decrease even if it is off of PACT."

What I got out of it is that we must must must get teachers to respond. The committee wanted to know why there were no teachers there. The committee was reminded them that the report card reflected days teachers were not in class. I suggested they have a public hearing on Saturday. (I got no takers.) There is a "Take your Legislator to School" day or week. I will send you that information. They said they really wanted to be asked to come to schools. This fight is far from being over. We need everyone's help in getting out letters, emails and notes.
