In addition to these increases, the South Carolina Council for the Social Studies was honored to present James Banks, a nationally known author and public speaker. He spoke on multiculturalism for the new century. Attendees left the conference with a list of books suggested by Dr. Banks that will better prepare them to meet the challenges of the new millennium.

Other keynotes for our conference included  Veronica Davis Gerald, Director of History and Archives at the Penn Center, Inc. in St. Helena, SC, and Rick Theisen, current president of the National Council for the Social Studies. Dr. Gerald spoke on African-American heritage in South Carolina and Mr. Theisen challenged us to prepare for the millennium in his keynote address.

The SCCSS is pleased to announce that one of our own has been selected to lead Social Studies on a state level. James Bryan, president-elect, will be the Coordinator of Social Studies.

We look forward to continued growth of our organization and with your help working towards shaping the destiny of Social Studies in the great state of South Carolina.

Respectfully,

The Executive Board of
the South Carolina Council for the Social Studies
