Currently the College Board is in the process of redesigning its Advanced Placement curricular frameworks for social studies courses. To meet the needs of AP® teachers across the state, the South Carolina Council for the Social Studies is proud to announce the only state-wide professional development focused on the preparing teachers for the redesign of Advanced Placement social studies courses.  On May 09, 2015, we are offering two concurrent workshops!

Workshop #1: The European History Redesign

Our Keynote Speaker will be Patricia (Pat) McGloine, an AP® European History teacher at Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  Since 2007, Ms. McGloine has served on the Curriculum Development and Assessment Committee for the AP European History redesign. In addition, she has taught AP® European History for 25 years and has been a Table Leader at the AP® European History Reading for the past 13 years. A teacher leader in AP® European History, Ms. McGloine has served on AP textbook committees, trained AP® teachers, and presented on historical thinking skills.

Breakout sessions include:

  • The New AP®EH Exam: Learn about the new components of the exam, how the exam aligns with the redesigned course, and strategies for preparing students for the exam.
  • Theory to Practice in the Redesigned AP®EH Classroom: Learn about classroom methods to best serve students in the redesigned European History course.
  • Realigning Your AP®EH Syllabus: Learn about the new curricular components of the redesign and workshop your current syllabus for the auditing process.  Participants are asked to bring a laptop with their current syllabus.

Workshop #2: AP®USH – Learning from “Year One” of the Redesign

Let’s begin preparing for “year two” by reflecting on “year one.” Through a workshop setting, participants will be engaged in three sessions. Opportunities will be built into the sessions for teachers to share and learn from their experiences with the first year of the redesign of AP®USH. Participants are asked to bring a laptop. Sessions scheduled are:

Pacing and Thematic Curricular Alignment

Presenter: Dawn Lisk, College Board APUSH Reader; AP®USH Teacher, Nation Ford High School

Writing and Document Analysis in the Redesign

Presenter: Matt Rose, College Board AP®USH Reader; AP®USH Teacher, Spring Hill High School

Bridging AP and the EOC Under the Redesign

Presenter: Kathy Hogan, Member of the 2011 SC Social Studies Academic Standards Writing Panel; Former College Board AP®USH Reader and Master Teacher

The cost of the workshop is $50 for SCCSS Members ($60 for non-members). Lunch will be provided onsite.  For non-members, the cost includes one year of membership in SCCSS.  Please Note: to receive the materials on the day of the workshop, registration must be received by April 27, 2015.

Register at www.SCCSS.org. Please indicate which workshop – APUSH or APEH – you will be attending.
