EXPECTATIONS OF
EXCELLENCE: CURRICULUM STANDARDS FOR SOCIAL STUDIES
Developed by the NCSS National Task Force for Social Studies Standards
Bulletin No. 89, 178pp., 1994
The NCSS National Task Force for Social Studies Standards has produced a model based on
ten thematic strands for achieving excellence in social studies. In addition to defining
social studies and its critical mission, "to promote civic competence," this
document explains the purpose, organization, and utility of the standards and their
relationship to other standards in the field. It defines and presents each of the ten
thematic strands for three distinct levels: early grades, middle grades, and high school.
